What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep advanced starter kits are a great means to fix your gear until you can get to the trailhead to have it repaired professionally. The trick is knowing what to do with it when you need it.

Tools

It is important to be equipped with the right tools on to hand when out in the field. This kit was developed with that in mind. It includes all the essential hand tools necessary to repair things in the field. The tools are made from metal with the least amount of plastic so that they will stand up to use. The kit includes an afghan-like pouch with zippered for the coalcracker tools, a twist awl, Avon Starter Kits reamer and cutting shears and Gimlets (5MM). It also includes a bottle of coalcracker oil, illustrated instructions along with a wooden spool the reamer and twist Awl.

Repair Patches

If you've got a gap or two in your gear, you might want to consider adding some adhesive patches to choose your kit rep kit. These heavy-duty patches feature an ultra-high-performance adhesive that is applied to a durable polyurethane backing that allows a tear to recover under pressure. Available in clear and colored options, these patches provide durability against punctures, moisture, saltwater, sunlight and temperatures that are extreme.

If your kit does not include any of the items listed above it is possible to consider adding a waterproof Aquaseal wader sealant. This water-tight glue can be applied to plastics, fabrics, metals and more to provide an unbreakable fix. It's perfect for repairing drysuits and may be applied out in the field. Give the sealant at least 12 hours for it to cure before you can use the repaired equipment.

The most essential field fabric repair kit for nylon tents that have silicone impregnated, packs, rainwear and more. Includes one Clean Tape repair patch and an swatch of sil-nylon. Also included is a 1/4 ounce Gore-Tex Repair Adhesive, Sealant and Sealant tube and brush. Apply patch to clean, flat surface. Allow at least 1/2 inch overlap. Remove the release paper and rub the adhesive side down with moderate finger pressure.

Surface preparation is crucial for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone, or oils on shoes and boots could affect adhesion. Use Seam Grip with Cotol 240 Cure Accelerator to achieve the best results.

Adhesive patches

These patches with adhesive are ideal for those who don't want to sit around waiting to get back on the trail. Apply the self-adhesive patch, then roll it on.

Clean up the area that has been punctured and then apply the tube-scuffer, or sandpaper to roughen the surface, which helps glue stick. Then spread a thin coating of glue over the patch to cover an area that is at least as big as the patch itself. Let the glue become tacky then apply the patch with force and hold it in place.

This kit contains two clear, adhesive-backed Tenacious Tape pressure sensitive fabric patch for repair and a 1/4 ounce tube of Seam Grip urethane repair adhesive and sealant. Perfect for reinforcing damaged sleeping bags, tents rainwear, backpacks, and boots.
